In a long-awaited report issued on Wednesday, the UN agency estimated that serious human rights violations have been committed during the Chinese government’s efforts to fight terrorism and extremism. The agency cited what it described as former inmates of internment camps in Xinjiang with credible reports of torture and other forms of inhumane treatment between 2017 and 2019, including some cases of sexual violence. The UN body said the detainees had no form of redress.
