A British national has been killed while volunteering as a doctor in Ukraine. In a GoFundMe set up to bring his body home, 48-year-old Craig Mackintosh’s sister Lorna Mackintosh revealed he had been killed in Ukraine on August 24. Mackintosh is believed to have been shot and killed when his group was reportedly ambushed. Mrs Lorna said her brother, from Thetford, Norfolk, died in the “line of duty”. Mackintosh was a landscape gardener from Norfolk who had volunteered to work with Ukrainian forces. Reports said he was hit in the neck while trying to help a wounded soldier in a vehicle hit by a tank shell near the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. It comes as heavy fighting rages in Kherson as President Zelensky’s troops hope to retake the captured city, which was the first to fall into Russian hands. An adviser to the president said there would be no “quick wins” in Kherson as the counteroffensive continues.

ICYMI: Gorbachev to be given weekend, but no state funeral for ex-leader, Russian media report
There will be no state funeral for former Soviet Union president Mikhail Gorbachev, a Russian news agency reported on Wednesday. “There are no plans to hold a state funeral for Gorbachev,” sources told Interfax news agency. Earlier, the Gorbachev Foundation told the same agency that its founder would be buried at Moscow’s Novodevichy Cemetery next to his wife, Raisa, who died in 1999. Gorbachev died on Tuesday in a central Moscow hospital aged 91 after long illness. The funeral will take place on Saturday, Russian news agencies said, citing Gorbachev’s daughter and a spokesman for his foundation. It is said to take place in the famous Hall of Columns inside the Moscow House of Trade Unions, the same place where Joseph Stalin’s body was displayed after his death in 1953. Russian official says Zaporizhia nuclear plant site without power
An official stationed by Russia in the Russian-controlled Ukrainian town of Enerhodar, home to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, said the town was without power on Thursday, Russian state news agency TASS reported.
TASS quoted Alexander Volga as saying that there was no light in the city, but there was no reason not to carry out a planned visit of inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency to the nuclear plant. The Russian Defense Ministry said earlier that a Ukrainian “sabotage group” crossed the Dnipro River from nearby Ukrainian-controlled territory on Thursday morning. Vladimir Rogov, a Russian official in the Zaporizhia region, said Ukraine was trying to disrupt the IAEA delegation’s visit. Thomas Kingsley1 September 2022 09:05 1662018414
There are no “quick wins” in Kherson, says adviser Zelensky
Ukraine’s counteroffensive to retake Kherson has not stopped or failed, a senior adviser to Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, said. The city was the first to be captured by Russia when it launched its “special military operation” in February. Oleksiy Arestovych reiterated that the attack was still ongoing in a video posted on Telegram early Thursday morning. “The fact that we have not yet captured Kherson does not mean that the operation in the south has stopped or failed. It is executed in a scheduled manner. We destroy enemy logistics, air defense systems, fuel and ammunition depots. “There will be no quick wins. Initially, a strategy of systematically grinding out Putin’s army was adopted. “He’s long, so there’s a lot of work to be done.” Thomas Kingsley1 September 2022 08:46 1662017437

Ukraine’s nuclear reactor shut down due to bombing, operator says
One of two operational reactors at Ukraine’s Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant complex has been shut down by Russian shelling, Energoatom said on Thursday. “As a result of another mortar shelling by Russian forces at the site of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, emergency protection was activated and the operational fifth power unit was shut down,” Energoatom wrote on the Telegram messaging app. Energoatom added that “power unit No. 6 continues to operate in the energy system of Ukraine” and supplies electricity for the needs of the power plant. Russian Defense Ministry Says Ukraine Tried To Seize Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant
Russia’s defense ministry claimed that Ukrainian forces had tried to seize the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine. In a statement, the ministry said up to 60 Ukrainian soldiers crossed the Dnipro River, which separates territory held by the two sides, in boats at 06:00 local time. He called the operation a “provocation” aimed at disrupting a planned visit by International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors to the nuclear plant. The ministry said “measures were taken” to destroy opposing troops, including the use of military aviation. It comes as both nations blame each other for attacks on the nuclear plant, which has been a source of concern as Ukraine’s energy agency warned of a hydrogen leak. Ukraine’s continued missile attacks can exploit Russia’s problems in war, UK says
Ukraine’s use of high-speed anti-radiation missiles (HARMs) against Russian radars could prove a problem for Moscow, which is already showing signs of weakening the invasion, Britain’s Ministry of Defense said today. “A substantial, sustained degradation of Russian HARM radars would be a significant setback to Russia’s already problematic situational awareness,” the UK Foreign Office said in its latest intelligence briefing. Over the past two days, Ukrainian armed forces have launched offensive operations in southern Ukraine, backed by intensive long-range raids against Russian command and logistics posts across the occupied zone, the ministry said. “Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense also released video of Ukrainian aircraft firing high-speed anti-radiation missiles (HARMs). Russia has previously claimed to have recovered fragments of these types of weapons, which are designed to detect and destroy radars,” the ministry said in its briefing. He added that Russia has prioritized strong ground-based air defense – the radar coverage that enables this is a critical capability in its operation in Ukraine. Zelensky welcomes the return of Ukrainian students to school for the new year
Students in war-torn Ukraine return to their schools today for the new academic year, which Volodymyr Zelensky hailed as a “day of knowledge”. “Today you go to school, start your studies, continue your education. Today you will have the opportunity to see, hear, learn – Ukraine. Knowledge about it, words about it, dreams about it – which concerned you. About your life. Free, clean, brave and smart,” Mr. Zelensky said in a special address to the children. He added: “It is important to continue learning. And this knowledge about Ukraine is not interrupted because this knowledge gives us strength. This knowledge has become our weapon.” Asking students to pursue knowledge, Mr Zelensky said: “Knowing and defending always go hand in hand. To know more than a thousand years of history of our state and to defend ourselves when someone says that Ukraine did not exist.” Calling the students in Ukraine brave, the wartime president added: “This summer – nobody had a summer. Time passed, like from winter to winter.” “Instead of playgrounds, it could be in basements. “Instead of playing football in the street, the children had to stay with adults and hear too much tragic news,” he said.
