Built on top of the previous ‘Dirty Ferns’ hip jump, the makers have added in an on-off jump for riders. The jump will have a 40-foot gap to a 30-foot landing spot before another 40-foot gap from the feature. Gee Atherton says this new feature adds to the “pace section” of the course where maintaining perfect speed is required to set a good time. The other new feature on the 2022 course is two huge double jumps, the first is 86 feet while riders will have a slightly easier 85-foot gap on the second. Both jumps have the landings hidden from the takeoffs, so it will be a completely blind mission for the riders on their race routes. Originally the first jump was 91 feet, but it was shrunk slightly as it was difficult to get enough speed to clear the gap. After cutting down trees in the “Dirty Ferns” and “Waterfall” sections, the previous jumps seemed a bit small, so the builders felt that something bigger should be added. Dan Atherton says: “The potential was suddenly there for some great, Fest Series – Features style. The newly opened, soft terrain acts as the perfect foundation for fast, long jumps – something that, until now, Hardline has lacked.” Dan Atherton has already fallen victim to the new features after a major crash on the 30ft landing resulted in a trip to hospital. Lucky Dan escaped with just a few grazings and is back preparing the course for next week. Dan said: “Testing the on-off was difficult because we couldn’t imagine the outcome and didn’t know exactly how to do it. We dug a load on the edge of the airfield to get out if we needed to bail, but I went too far and I missed the braking point so it bounced and I piled straight into the back of the landing.’ The construction crew will be putting some finishing touches on the course this weekend before the riders arrive for the big race on Sunday September 11th.
