Lukoil said in a statement that Ravil Maganov “passed away after a serious illness,” but gave no further details. Some Russian reports suggest that Maganov died by suicide. Russian news outlets said his body was found at the Central Clinical Hospital, which often treats Russia’s political and business elite. He appeared to have fallen from a sixth-floor window, reports said. The state-run Tass news agency cited an unnamed law enforcement source as saying Maganov died by suicide and had been hospitalized after suffering a heart attack. Lukoil was one of the few Russian companies to publicly call for an end to Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, calling in March for an “immediate cessation of the armed conflict.” Trending Stories

Maganov took over as chairman of Lukoil, Russia’s largest private company, two years ago. He is just the latest of several Russian business executives to die under mysterious circumstances this year.

The Russian oligarch and former vice chairman of the gas company Novatek was found dead by hanging in April. At the scene his wife and daughter were found stabbed to death. Former Gazprombank vice president Vladislav Avayev was found dead in his Moscow home with his wife and daughter in April. Alexander Subbotin, a former director of Lukoil, was found dead in the basement of a shaman’s house in May. Maganov is also not the first prominent Russian to die after falling from a window. There have been numerous documented cases of such deaths in the country in recent years.
