Jacksonville, NC — Just four days into the new school year, before the morning bell even rang, one student was killed and two others, including a teacher, were injured in an attack at a North Carolina high school. A student resource officer responded to reports of a fight between students around 7 a.m. at Northside High School in Jacksonville, NC. The brawl, which may have been gang-related, led to a stabbing that left one student dead, hundreds of students and parents shocked – and now another student behind bars. The officer responded in less than 30 seconds and was able to arrest the assailant, who was also identified as a 16-year-old student. Despite medical treatment at the scene, one student died, while a juvenile and a teacher were injured. Two victims from the incident are being treated at Camp Lejeune Naval Medical Center. Melissa Brison, a mother of three students at the school, said her children were outside when the fight broke out, but were escorted into the cafeteria to wait out the subsequent lockdown. He wondered why the school doesn’t have metal detectors. “Everybody’s looking for a gun. Nobody’s paying attention to the 100 other ways you can hurt somebody,” Brisson said. The school was on lockdown until 8:45 a.m., when the school began sending students home. A district spokesman said investigators kept some students at the school longer to make sure there were witnesses. Sports events for the next two days have been canceled and students will be in virtual learning on Friday. Students will return to classes on Tuesday after the holiday weekend. “These kids are going to be so stressed,” Brisson said. “Someone they knew wouldn’t be there Monday or Tuesday.” After the incident, some grieving parents and students shared their respects. Maria Ortega and her son left a bouquet of flowers on the Northside High School sign. “I want to pay tribute to a little student monarch who has gained his wings, he will no longer be with us,” said Oretga tearfully. Her son is a senior at the school – one of hundreds lucky enough to be home safe tonight. Even though her son is safe, Oretta cried as she said, “Someone’s baby boy is not coming home.” Although the suspect is under 18, he could be tried as an adult. “If it’s a violent felony, under North Carolina state statute he’s going to be transferred to the superior court to be tried as an adult,” says District Attorney Ernie Lee. Will have an answer soon if the student will be charged. “Even though my kids are safe,” Brisson said, “I probably know who’s involved. “It’s not really for me,” he said. “Someone’s child isn’t going home.”
